5 Natural Ways To Remove Makeup

After a long day in the office or a night on the town, removing your makeup before bed can seem like a daunting task. When you head to the sink only to find drops of cleanser left in the bottle, you’ve all but given up on the idea of a clean face hitting the pillow. But before you lay down with a full face of makeup, check your kitchen, because you likely have some natural ingredients that can help unclog your pores.

Olive Oil

Waterproof eyeliner is no match for the power of olive oil. This oil can break down your most stubborn water-resistant makeup without forcing you to scrub or pull your skin. Massage a quarter-size amount of oil into skin. Rinse with tepid water and pat your skin dry. Use your natural face oil to hydrate your skin after cleansing.

Steam

Ok, this method is more for skin treatment than makeup removal, but it left our skin feeling so hydrated, we had to share it. Fill your sink with steaming hot water and lean over it, allowing your skin to absorb the steam (it helps to lay a hand towel over your head to hold the steam in). You can try this steam treatment before or after makeup removal with your favorite cleanser. The steam will open your pores, making it easier to remove your makeup, or after cleansing, allow the steam to hydrate your skin.

Banana + Oat Flour

Bananas contain enzymes that are great for cleansing, and it’s chock full of skin benefitting nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Zinc, to name a few! Mash a banana with the back of a fork until smooth, and mix with a 1/4 tsp. of oat flour to naturally exfoliate, soften and smooth skin while cleansing. Work into skin in circular motions, and remove with a warm washcloth for a fresh faced glow.

Cucumber

Don’t save the cucumber just for eye puffiness, this vegetable can create a great cleanser. Toss a small cucumber into the blender to create a paste. Add a dash of olive oil into the mix and you’re ready to cleanse your skin. Not only will this mixture remove your makeup, but the cooling agents in the cucumber combat inflammation and reduce irritation. Massage the paste into your skin and remove with a warm washcloth.

Lemon + Coconut Sugar

Lemon has long been used as a natural skincare staple, and it’s antibacterial properties make it great for cleansing skin. Coconut sugar isn’t just a tasty alternative to white refined sugar either, it also has exfoliating power to remove debris and dead skin from your face. With its high levels of amino acids, which are key to collagen production, coconut sugar is a great natural exfoliant for skin. In your palm, mix together a squeeze of lemon juice with a few drops of olive oil and a pinch of coconut sugar. Once combined, apply to skin in circular motions to boost circulation and exfoliation. Rinse face with warm water and pat dry for brighter, smoother and clearer skin.
