A Thank You From Our Founder, Mariska Nicholson
Hello amazing Olive + M community,
I wanted to take a moment to share something with you this Thanksgiving.
While there are so many areas of my life that I am thankful for, I would like to call out one that is currently speaking to me in a profound way.
I just finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. In this book, Liz shares her thoughts on creative living and how she believes one can achieve this way of life. She says, “The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.” WOW. What a magical and fantastic opportunity! The moment I read that, it struck me as something I have always known about myself, and I smiled.
Liz goes on to talk about ideas and how they show up, coaxing that jewel inside each of us to reveal itself.
“I believe that our planet is not only inhabited by animals and plants and bacteria and viruses, but also by ideas. Ideas are disembodied, energetic life forms. They are completely separate from us, but capable of interacting with us-albeit strangely. Ideas have no material body, but they do have a conscientiousness, and they most certainly have will. Ideas are driven by a single impulse: to be made manifest. And the only way an idea can be made manifest in our world is through collaboration with a human partner. It is only through a human’s effort that an idea can be escorted out of the ether and into the the realm of the actual.”
This, my friends, is how Olive + M was born. I heard the idea in my head. I became curious about her. I reached for her and explored where she came from and where we might possibly go together. I started working on her, one day at time. Some days I had no idea where we were going, but we just kept going. I believed in her and she in me. I refused to put her down or let her go. She chose me as the person to manifest her, and for that I am forever grateful. This is the Big Magic Liz speaks of.
As time went on, I got others interested in my idea—to help Olive + M grow. I am so thankful for my creative team and all the ideas they manifest daily. Ideas are circling around this team like big, gorgeous, glittery swirls of magic, and it’s incredible to see them reach for these ideas and wrestle them into “the realm of the actual.” Big Magic indeed!
This Thanksgiving, I leave you with this: Pause for a moment and give thanks for all the ideas and the Big Magic you have created in life. Big ideas, small ideas, any ideas! And if there is an idea that has been showing up in your mind lately, wanting to get noticed—go for it. I think you’ll be amazed at what can come from a little courage and listening to your inner voice.
Also, pick up a copy of Big Magic. I hope you’re as inspired by this book as I was and that it sparks all kinds of new ideas.
All my best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving!
