Are Beauty Box Subscriptions Worth The Cost?
In case you’ve missed (and we’re not sure how you could) the latest craze in retail, it’s the subscription box trend. From beauty brands to at-home chefs, you can now be a connoisseur or expert at nearly anything for one low monthly installment on your debit card. And to be honest, we get the appeal. A box of healthy, fresh food arrives on your doorstep and you get to skip the grocery store experience – sign us up!
The downside is, not everything that comes in a monthly kit is actually healthy for you, or your skin. Beauty box subscriptions, for example, are a surprise purchase. While that is actually what attracts some buyers – trying something new each month – that means your skin is also trying new things each month, some of which may not be all that great.
The Scary Surprise
For people who aren’t crazy about the idea of going to beauty stores and shelling out $40 for a new foundation that may or may not be a perfect fit for their skin type, beauty boxes seem like a good idea. You get to try a number of products before committing to a full size, pricey item.
When you don’t know what’s in the box, however, the products can be harsh on your skin. For example, if your skin is dry and acne-prone, but the products you receive are geared more toward oily skin types, you not only run the risk of completely throwing off your skin’s pH balance, but you’re also wasting money that could go toward a quality skincare product designed for your precise needs.
Let’s be honest, when you receive the beauty box each month, are you researching the brand to see how their products are created? Many beauty brands use parabens, synthetic colors, fragrances, and test their products on animals. For those with sensitivities to toxic ingredients or desire vegan skincare products, beauty boxes aren’t ideal. It’s important to understand what you’re putting on your skin. Honestly, if you wouldn’t put a product in your body, why put it on your body?
“But I subscribe to a vegan beauty box..”
There are a number of cruelty-free, vegan beauty boxes on the market that offer a variety of organic products. If you’re signed up – you’re headed in the right direction! As with any box subscription, opt with a shorter agreement, say three months or even month-to-month if available, and find a few products you love. In the long run, you’ll save more by finding products that work well for you, and buying the full size items rather than funneling money to boxes where you only use a couple of the products.
If you’re captivated by the idea of receiving a new box each month with products to try, do your research. Have a healthy skin care line that you stick with and use the boxes as a way to try organic lipsticks, mascaras or toothpastes. Your goal is to have the healthiest, most radiant skin you possibly can, and turning to natural products that moisturize and combat acne are the best way to start that journey.
