Is Olive Oil Good for Your Skin?

For thousands of years the people of the Mediterranean have understood the life giving benefits of the olive tree and its precious fruit, the olive. Olive oil has been used for religious rituals, medicinal purposes, food, perfumes and skin care for thousands of years by the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. So what goodness is hiding inside these little gems called olives, and more importantly, how can our skin benefit from it?

The vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids your skin needs and craves are all found in olive oil. The molecular structure of olive oil is closely matched with your skin’s natural sebum, so when it is applied topically, your skin recognizes it, allowing it to deeply penetrating the skin’s lipid layer to lock in moisture. Your skin is left feeling hydrated and velvety soft giving the skin’s surface a lasting, dewy glow.

Another plus is the antioxidant properties found in olive oil actually aid in the reduction of fine lines and the production of collagen. In addition, Vitamins E and K work to repair and renew free radical damaged skin that’s caused by overexposure to harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, air pollution, and other modern-day environmental hazards. These nutrients are naturally capable of stimulating cells and restoring skin to a firmer, smoother, and healthier complexion. As a result, when you use olive oil on the skin, you end up with a youthful, healthy glow that leaves skin soft and hydrated.

Though some may fear that putting oil on their skin will in turn make their skin oily or greasy, the opposite is true. Oil dissolves oil. Your skin naturally creates its own oil called sebum. Dirt and bacteria can get trapped in this sebum and be pulled deep into your pores. When you use harsh cleansers to wash your face, they can cause an overproduction of sebum, which is simply our skins effort to replace the valuable barrier that was taken away. When cleansing with oil, you replace dirty oil with beneficial oil, leaving your skin clean, radiant, soft and glowing. Even celebs like Chloë Grace Moretz are on board with the new oil cleansing trend — she credits oil with clearing up her complexion.

With olive oil, the opportunities and benefits are endless! So go on, slather it all over your skin, and reap the benefits of one of Mother Nature’s most valuable gifts.
